This week on the Environmental Justice Report, I will be interviewing environmental activist Maggie Hurchalla. Maggie was hit with a SLAPP suit by a corporation named Mosaic. Her alleged 'crime'? Using her 1st Amendment rights. Maggie was advising colleagues who were council members on licensing for the big phosphate corporation, Mosaic. She was using her 1st amendment rights to present an opposition case against Mosaic and was rewarded by Mosaic suing her for millions of dollars in alleged damages. Maggie lost and was ordered to pay in excess of 4 million dollars to Mosaic. She appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court, who then refused to hear her case and offered no reason why they denied her petition. This case is not only about environmental concerns, but about the corporate strategy known as SLAPP suits. SLAPP suits are civil lawsuits that generally have no true legitimacy and are engineered to silence dissent--and destroy the 1st amendment for REAL people as opposed to corporate persons.
Come hear Maggie Hurchalla's story!
