                                                                                          "Follow the YELLOW BRICK ROAD!!"

Or, so we were taught when I was growing up ....

Four young siblings, dutifully stretched out on the rug before the old Dumont B&W TV ... as CBS (mostly) presented "one more time" the ever magical Adventures of Dorothy -- in "the mysterious land of Oz ...."

Our mother's name was "Dorothy" ... which probably accounts for a lot of our recurring ritual before that old TV.  But then--

There was the Land of Oz itself: 

An astonishing place (to an impressionable kid ...) -- blatantly occupied by "witches," "flying Monkeys," Munchkins ... and, of course--

The Wizard himself!

The other afternoon, when Georgia Lambert forwarded me one the the latest Perseverance color images -- not from "Oz,"  but from a land even MORE mysterious ... to that ten-year-old "now all grown up" --  it ALL came rushing back--

For -- stretching out ahead of the car-sized Perseverance Rover on the screen -- was an obvious, unmistakable, ancient, broken--

ROAD!

A road ... on MARS!!
