Randall Herbert Balmer is an American historian of American religion. He taught at Barnard College and Columbia University for twenty-seven years before moving to Dartmouth College in 2012, where he was named the Mandel Family Professor in the Arts & Sciences. He is currently the John Phillips Professor in Religion at Dartmouth. He is also an Episcopal priest.

Randall has published 10 books, among them Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, which was turned into a popular PBS series, and God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush. His newest book to be released in February, which will be the subject of our interview is Solemn Reverence: The Separation of church and state in America.
