We have heard the argument before especially during the Harry Truman presidency. Each country has a right to self determination and not to be subjected to communism. It was called the Truman doctrine. President Truman continued in a war under Eisenhower that killed 40,000 Americans in Korea only to remain in a stalemate at the 38th parallel in a truce. Hungary went down in 1956 under Russian rule and so did Czechoslovakia in 1968 before the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. Now the whole world is suddenly rallying to salvage the Ukraine, a country enshrined in Russian history. Kiev used to be the capitol of Russia and Russia does not want to let it go symbolically. With the Winter Olympics starting in early February, will Putin really start a war when all eyes of the international community are on him? He plans to attend the Bejing Olympics. Putin's style of diplomacy is from the 19th Century and no matter how many countries want to join the EU, he wants to leverage his territorial expanision and restate his clenches in Ukraine. The Canadian Prime Minister is sinking $200 million plus into defending Ukraine.
