The South American country Venezuela has been caught in a downward spiral for years with growing political discontent further fuelled by skyrocketing hyperinflation, power cuts and shortages of food and medicine.
It is unclear who the president is. after the events of January 23, 2019. According to the legislature, Juan Guaidó, declared himself acting president and said he would assume the powers of the executive branch from there onwards.
This is a challenge to President Maduro who was reelected to another six year term in May.
