The South never had a vision. They were the magnet for criminals with a temperance for slaves, a mindset to be served. The white Southerners including Portugese and Dutch descent wanted a subjugated society in which what they thought a lesser (but more stronger race) could serve them. The only shining pearl was people like Eli Whitney who invented the cotton gin.Born into slavery in Virginia in the mid-to-late 1850s, Another inspiration was Booker T. Washington put himself through school and became a teacher after the Civil War. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (now known as Tuskegee University), which grew immensely and focused on training African Americans in agricultural pursuits. A political adviser and writer, Washington clashed with intellectual W.E.B. Du Bois over the best avenues for racial uplift. He used to get up at 4 a.m. to read and write before he worked in salt mines in W. VA at age 9. He never stopped persisting.
